Dr Judy King PhD, MHSc, BHSc (PT) Dr. Judy King is a physiotherapist and is an assistant professor in the physiotherapy program of the University of Ottawa in Canada. Judy graduated from the physiotherapy program of McMaster University in 1987 and returned a few years later to undertake her master’s degree focused on “The Treatment Practices in Canadian Critical Care Units” with an emphasis on the use of mobilization of patients in the intensive units. In 2007 she graduated from the University of Ottawa with a PhD in which she examined “The meaning of patient education experiences for adults living with limited literacy and chronic illnesses”. Prior to joining the University of Ottawa full time, Judy had also held sessional teaching appointments in physiotherapy programs across Canada as well as in the United States and Ukraine. Her patient centred research focus is in the area of patient education, specifically as it relates to people living with cardiac and respiratory conditions. Fields of study include health literacy, interprofessional education, mentorship, patient safety, and transformative learning. Dr. King has a number of peer reviewed publications as well as a chapter about adult and patient education in the textbook, Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy; Management and Case Studies. With close to 30 years of clinical experience working with people with heart and lung conditions in a variety of clinical settings, she continues to maintain a clinical position working at The Ottawa Hospital, a large bilingual teaching hospital, treating patients in the Intensive Care Unit. Judy has received both provincial and national awards for her teaching and mentoring of students and new health professionals. Educating her future professional colleagues, Dr King believes it is important to be a role model and mentor for her students therefore she volunteers on a number of provincial, national and international committees including being a founding executive committee member of the International Confederation of Cardiorespiratory Physical Therapists (ICCrPT) of the World Confederation of Physical Therapy (WCPT).
